Pitch deck: what investors look for in 12 slides
A pitch deck is the ten-to-twelve-slide document investors skim in a few minutes to decide whether to take a meeting. The decks that get meetings lead with traction, make the ask explicit and answer the questions investors would ask anyway. Here is the slide-by-slide checklist, the mistakes that lose meetings, and free tools to score, rehearse and review yours.
QUICK ANSWER · REVIEWED 7 NOVEMBER 2026
A pre-seed or seed pitch deck should have about 12 slides: cover, problem, solution, product, traction, market (TAM, SAM and SOM), business model, competition, go-to-market, team, financials and the ask. Investors spend only a few minutes on a first read, so traction, team and the ask must be legible without the voice-over, and every claim should carry a number.

The 12 slides and what each one must prove
1. Cover and problem
One line on what you do and for whom, then the problem with a number attached: how many people have it, how often, and what it costs them today.
2. Solution and product
What the product does in one sentence and one screenshot. If it is live, show the real product; if it is vibe-coded, say so and show what you understand about what the AI built.
3. Traction
Usage, retention, revenue or pilots, with the dates. This is the slide investors flip to first; if you have no traction yet, show the evidence that customers want the product.
4. Market and business model
A bottom-up TAM, SAM and SOM that investors believe, and how you make money: pricing, margin and the unit economics you already know.
5. Competition and go-to-market
Who else solves the problem and why you win, then the channel you will use to reach the first thousand customers and what it costs.
6. Team, financials and the ask
Why this team, an 18-month plan with the milestones the money buys, and the ask: how much, on what instrument, at what valuation range.

Score, rehearse and review the deck
The scorecard checks 36 points slide by slide, the script builder times a three-minute pitch, the mock meeting pushes back on vague answers, and the AI review in the SeedScope app reads the actual deck.
Do this
Score the deck against the 36-point checklist before anyone sees it.
Write the script beat by beat and time it; three minutes is about 400 words.
Run the mock meeting and the dry run until no answer is missing a number.

Questions founders ask
How many slides should a pitch deck have?
Ten to twelve for a first meeting. Put the detail in an appendix or the data room, not in the main flow, and keep each slide to one point with one number.
What is the most important slide in a pitch deck?
Traction, if you have it. If not, team and problem carry the deck at pre-seed: investors fund evidence that you understand the customer and can execute.
Should I send the deck before the meeting?
Send a short version so the investor can qualify fit, and keep the narrative for the call. Assume it will be forwarded, so it has to work without you.
Can AI write my pitch deck?
AI can draft the structure and copy quickly, but investors spot generic slides immediately. Use it to build, then test the deck against the scorecard and the mock meeting, and replace adjectives with numbers.
Bring the report investors ask for, not just the deck.
