Why send monthly updates

Investors who receive updates invest in the next round at a far higher rate. Updates also create a track record: a prospective lead who has seen six months of honest updates needs less diligence. The best founders send them before they have investors.

The structure

A three-line summary, key metrics with the month-over-month change, highlights, lowlights, asks, and thanks. Keep it under 400 words. Numbers first, narrative second.

Be honest about lowlights

Investors trust updates that include problems. A lowlight with what you are doing about it is a strength; a string of good news followed by a surprise bridge round is not.

The asks

Introductions to specific customers or hires, feedback on a decision, a vendor recommendation. Specific asks get answered; “let me know if you can help” does not.

Questions founders ask

Who should receive the update?

Current investors, advisors, and prospective investors who agreed to follow along. Use BCC or a tool; never expose the list.

Monthly or quarterly?

Monthly before Series A, quarterly after. More often if something big happens.

Can I use this without investors?

Yes. Send it to mentors and prospective investors as a track record.

Stop guessing which investors fit. Let them find you.
