Financial projection and funding need calculator

Enter customers, growth, churn, price and costs. The model projects revenue, costs and cash month by month, finds the break-even month and tells you how much funding the plan needs.

Funding you need to get through the plan
$680k to $850k
Cash bottoms out at $-680k in month 36. The higher number adds a 25 percent buffer. You do not break even inside 36 months. Without new money you run out of cash in month 7.

A driver-based model, not a forecast: customers grow from acquisition and churn, revenue from customers times price, costs from your fixed base. Change one input at a time to see what moves the funding need most.

How do you project revenue for an early-stage startup?

Start from drivers, not from a revenue target: customers today, new customers per month, growth in acquisition, churn and revenue per customer. Revenue is customers times price; the shape of the curve comes from churn and growth. Investors trust a model whose assumptions they can argue with.

How do you calculate how much to raise from a projection?

The lowest point of the cash line is your funding need. Add a buffer of 20 to 30 percent for delays and raise that amount, or restructure the plan so the trough is smaller. The Raise Calculator gives the quick version; this model shows where the need comes from.

What do investors look for in a projection?

Three things: that revenue is driver-based, that costs follow a hiring plan, and that the two most sensitive assumptions are named. Projections are judged on reasoning, not on the year-three number.

What this model simplifies

Monthly churn and growth are constant, gross margin is one number, and there is no seasonality or working capital. Change one input at a time to see which assumption moves the funding need most, then build a fuller model in a spreadsheet.

Questions founders ask

Can I export the table?

Select and copy the table into a spreadsheet. An export button is on the roadmap.

Which churn rate should I use?

Use your measured monthly churn. If you have none yet, 3 to 5 percent for SMB SaaS and 1 to 2 percent for mid-market are common planning assumptions.

Does SeedScope use this model in its valuation?

No. SeedScope benchmarks your startup against 1M+ companies and your own data; this tool helps you plan the raise.
